| A partnership between ACCORD in Durban and the DPCR in Uppsala, in cooperation with NAI, has been funded by Sida in order to contribute towards the public goods of durable peace, democracy and sustainable development in Africa. Designed as a comprehensive and mutually supportive partnership, the overall ambition is reflected in the programme title, From Wars of the Weak to Strong Peace: Developing Capacity for Conflict Resolution in favour of Democracy and Human Progress in Africa. The research part of this agreement between ACCORD and the DPCR focuses key aspects of conflict resolution in Africa. The focus is on how to go from armed conflict to war termination and peacemaking (ending a war) to peacebuilding (preventing a new war from starting) via dealing with challenges to lasting peace and the problematic of achieving both freedom from fear (security) and freedom from want (political and socio-economic well-being). I would conceive of this as an interesting panel in general terms, e.g. beyond the partnership, capable of attracting the considerable number of Africanists in Europe working on conflict resolution issues of the African continent. A focus on the role of Third Parties could in this regard be added, in line with the overall thematic of the Conference: ‘African Engagements: On whose terms?’ |
