Transactions among actors in the diverse issue-areas beyond the national frontier have always assumed dynamic character. Hence, the saying that international relations is permanently in a state of flux. For the African continent, this cannot be less true. Over the centuries, Africa has passed through various phases in her interactions with the outside world. Thus, from the pre-state formation, to the era of colonization through the cold war era, down to the contemporary period of globalization, Africa has witnessed tremendous changes in both the pattern and character of her global interaction. But generally, Africa has continued to maintain a subordinated position in these various phases of her international relations.

This Panel will therefore focus attention on the thematic issues that have shaped and continue to shape this changing nature of Africa’s international relations. The following sub-themes or other related sub-themes provide the basis for the panel’s discussion.

  1. The Character of State and the Nature of Africa’s International Relations
  2. The Impact of Globalization on Africa’s International Relations
  3. The Mass Media and the Changing Nature of Africa’s International Relations
  4. Repositioning Africa for a more Effective Role in the Contemporary International Relations
