Research and publications: 

CAS undertakes cutting-edge interdisciplinary research across the continent. Our scholars are committed to the critical study of a diverse range of topics as well as the pursuit of inclusive, ethical and equitable partnerships. As the largest centre for African studies in Europe, we are at the forefront of theoretical, empirical and methodological innovation. Our rigorous research also shapes local, national and international debates and policy-making, as recognised by our "outstanding" impact rating in the UK’s Research Excellence Framework.

Teaching in African Studies: 

CAS offers interdisciplinary and research-led teaching on Africa and on international development. We seek to contribute to collective efforts to centre African voices, theorising and experiences in understanding Africa and the contemporary world. We offer six postgraduate programmes. Our four MSc programmes are MSc Africa and International Development, MSc International Development, and MSc International Development (Online Learning), and MSc Global Challenges (Online Learning). Our two PhD programmes are PhD in African Studies and PhD in International Development. We teach more than 20 courses across postgraduate and undergraduate degree programmes, both for our on-campus students in Edinburgh and for our online students around the world. Students in our programmes come from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and geographic areas. Our MSc cohorts consistently include students from every continent of the world. Our large and diverse PhD student cohort conduct cutting-edge research across Africa as part of a lively research community.
